The People |
|
The people of Bhutan are peace-loving, spiritual, and open people. They love to hold festivals and entertain guests. Much of what they do artistically, culturally, and socially is based on their deep faith in Buddha. There are seven different sub-cultures in Bhutan.
Brokpas
Brokpas are semi-nomadic people who live in the northeast of Bhutan. They rear yak and sheep and travel to higher land in the summer to accommodate their flocks. They speak Bro-kad and live in the villages of Merak and Sakteng.
Tshanglas
Tshanglas (also known as Sharchops) speak Tshnglakha and inhabit the eastern part of Bhutan. They are weavers and produce beautiful silk fabrics.
Kurtoeps
Kurtoeps live along the Kurichu River in the Lhutentse district. They are also known for their weaving.
Bumthaps
Bumpthaps live in Central Bhutan and speak Bumtapkha. They rear yak and sheep and make fabric from the hair.
Mangdeps
Mangdeps also live in central Bhutan. They speak Mangdepkha.
Khengpas
Khengpas are another set of people that live within the central region of Bhutan. They speak khengkha and work with bamboo and cane to create crafts.
Ngalops
These people live within western Bhutan and speak Dzongkha, which is the national language.
Lhotshampas
Lhotshampas live within southern Bhutan and speak Lhotshamkha. They are Hindu, rather than Buddhist and have their own unique style of dress.
Layaps
Layaps live in the northwest part of the country near the Brokpas. They speak Layapkha and are also nomadic people.
