Flora and Fauna

The flora and fauna of Bhutan make it one of the top travel destinations for nature lovers! Bhutan has a varied climate, making it an area rich in diverse plant and animal life. There are few other places in the world that can boast such diversity. In addition, Bhutan has take great measures to conserve their environment and over 35% of the country is in some form of ecological protection, whether it is through National Park protection, Conservation Area, or a Biological corridor.

There are over 5,500 species of plants (300 of which have medicinal uses), 770 species of fauna, and more than 165 species of mammals in Bhutan. There are various forests within Bhutan consisting of mixed conifer, fir, chirpine, blue pine, tropical lowlands, and upland hardwood forests. Some of the plants include Rhododendron, daphne, magnolias, gentian, and junipers.

There are three main sections of Bhutan, all containing differing animal life. The Southern Foothills, which are tropical, are home to the tiger, the clouded leopard, elephants, water buffalo, gura, and hog deer. The temperate zone, which is most of the country contains leopard, black bears, the red panda and the wild pig. The Alpine Zone, located in the North, contains red panda, marmot and blue sheep. In addition to all of the mammals there are also over 650 species of birds that have been recorded, including the Chestnut Breates Partridge, Blyth's Trogon, the Wood Snipe, and the White Bellied Heron.

Bhutan is an area of rich biological diversity. It is a hub for 221 global endemic birds. Over 670 species of birds have been recorded in Bhutan and many more are likely to be found. Bhutan is one of the world's top 10 ecological "hotspots" and as such does much to preserve its plant and animal life.
