Nimalung and Kurjey Tsechus:
June 30, 2009 through July 2, 2009
June is a very special month in Bhutan, when the ancient Nimalung and Kurjey Tsechus (or festivals) begin. Thses ancient religious festivals bring good luck, prosperity, and a plentiful harvest to the people of Bhutan and provide the opportunity to wipe the slate clean for good luck abounds!
The heart of these festivals is the dancing. There are seven different dances performed on the first day alone! These dances, which are spiritual in nature, are performed in full costume and each tells a different story. In the dance of the Four Stags (Shaacham), the dancers tell the story of UgyenRinpoche, who rode a stags to subdue the king of the wind who was bringing misery on the people. The dance expresses gratitude at the restoration of happyness and peace to Bhutan.
